Boulby Mine Dark Matter Research Papers

Abstract: The Boulby Dark Matter Collaboration (BDMC) is running a WIMP Dark Matter research programme in the underground laboratory of Boulby Mine. The two axes of the programme are based on (1) liquid Xenon (LXe) as the WIMP target and (2) directional detection in low pressure gas detectors.

Boulby Mine Dark Matter Research Papers

For many years our main dark matter activity has been undertaken with experiments built and run at Boulby Mine, part of the Institute of Underground Science (IUS) at Sheffield. Recently we have also joined the larger-scale projects with experiments running or to be run in France and the USA.

Boulby Underground Laboratory is the UK’s deep underground science facility located 1.1km below ground in Boulby mine, a working potash, polyhalite and salt mine in the North East of England. Boulby is a special place for science, enabling a wide range of studies requiring access to the geologically interesti ng and ultra-low background deep.

Sheffield DRIFT-CYGNUS Group. The DRIFT (Directional Recoil Identification from Tracks) programme is a UK-US joint effort at the UK’s Boulby deep underground site that develops and runs detectors designed to determine the direction of the recoil tracks expected from WIMP dark matter particles.

At the location of the Boulby Underground Laboratory there is 1,100 metres of rock overhead. This makes it an ideal place for research because there is 1,100 metres of rock overhead resulting in a reduction in the rate of natural cosmic rays of a factor million compared to surface levels.

Boulby Mine Dark Matter Research Papers

Boulby has hosted experiments searching for proof of these Dark Matter particles for over two decades, including the world-renowned NAIAD, DRIFT and ZEPLIN projects. Now at Boulby, the underground laboratory now hosts two current Dark Matter search experiments: DRIFT-II and DM-Ice.

ICL UK works in partnership with STFC (Science and Technology Facilities Council), hosting underground laboratory space for a number of important scientific research projects. Christopher Toth is the youngest of the scientists working underground at Boulby Mine. Here, Christopher tells us more about his work as a scientist.

Boulby Mine is a 200-hectare (490-acre) site located just south-east of the village of Boulby, on the north-east coast of the North York Moors in Redcar and Cleveland, England. It is run by Cleveland Potash Limited, which is now a subsidiary of Israel Chemicals Ltd. (ICL).

The tunnels are tall and comfortably broad enough for two Land Rovers to drive past one another. The journey down, in a dark, cramped cage, air rushing past you, takes a full six-and-a-half minutes.

But nowhere deeper than the half a mile to the foot of Boulby potash mine, Europe’s deepest mine, in the North York Moors.. He descended to witness the search going on there for dark matter.

The laboratory is in a very low radiation environment which facilitates research into dark matter, cosmic rays and extremophiles. Following a full day of CPD at Boulby mine, teachers will be asked to develop a teaching resource to use in the classroom, based on the science taking place at the laboratory.

Abstract: The Boulby Dark Matter Collaboration (BDMC) is running several experiments for particle (WIMP) dark matter search in the Underground Boulby Laboratory. These include a liquid xenon detector (ZEPLIN I) and a low pressure gas TPC with directional sensitivity (DRIFT I). Next stage double-phase xenon detectors ZEPLIN II and ZEPLIN III, and a new TPC DRIFT II will be installed at Boulby.
